TAS Marketing Announces “Shared Profit Plan”

TAS MarketingSteve Michaels has found a way for smaller services to now get the higher multiples like larger services. He has spearheaded something akin to a buyers group – but in reverse. It’s called the shared profit plan or a sellers group. The large buyers of telephone answering services do not want to bother with smaller operations.

To combat this Michaels combines the billing of smaller answering services together. Then they can get to that sweet spot the larger buyers are looking for: at least $100,000 in billing per month. “We also are developing groups with $200k or even $300k in monthly billing,” Michaels added, “and then the multiple goes up for everyone.” There will be certain parameters to qualify for this program.

Privacy and confidentiality are major concerns. All sellers’ information will be kept private so they will not know who the other sellers are – just the buyer. “If you are thinking of selling and would like to receive fifteen times or more for your business, call me,” Michaels concluded. TAS Marketing Reports Sales Stats for 2014

TAS MarketingTAS Marketing’s Steve Michaels states that the multiples for sales of telephone answering services in the year 2014 slipped a little from last year. “The economy was still recovering and there were more sellers than buyers,” the longtime broker noted.

For 2014, sales for accounts only had an average multiple of 10.9 (with a high of 11.5 and the low was 4.3, which was for a distress sale and was not included in the average). For the entire going concern, the average multiple was 13.2 (with a high of 19.65 and a low of 8.6).

For 2013, sales for accounts only had an average multiple of 12.6 (the high was 13.2 and the low was 12). For the entire going concern, the average multiple was 14.2 (the high was 18 and the low was 11.5).

A Busy Year For TAS Marketing

TAS MarketingSteve and Chris Michaels, brokers for TAS Marketing, started out the year by attending and sponsoring most of the industry’s trades shows including, NAEO, SNUG, PIN, ATSI with a sponsorship for CAM-X. “We’ve met a lot of old friends and made some new ones,” stated Steve. “The year has been fun and full of excitement in the acquisition arena.”

So far this year, several businesses have been sold using the services of TAS Marketing:

  • Bay Area Answering Service, Houston Texas. Owner JR Patterson sold to Steve and Vonda Tackett of Rite Response.
  • Answer Network, Inc., Carpentersville, Illinois. Owner Bob Shields sold to Marty and JC Tibbitts from Citadel Contact Systems Inc.
  • TeleSpectrum Communications, Inc. Fargo, ND. Seller Lisa Bortnem-Wiser sold to Pete Hainey from Customer Elation.
  • A Communications Link, Azusa, California. Owner Vicky Chavez sold to Doug Lindsey from A Better Answer.
  • Custom Communications, Inc., of Livermore, California. Owner Keith Benton sold to Roger Roberge and Shamess Twardy of Excel TeleMessaging, Inc.

TAS Marketing Celebrates 30 Years

From its humble corporate headquarters in northwest Montana, TAS Marketing has supplied answering services with products and services for over 30 years.  President and Broker, Steve Michaels says that he has gone through the gauntlet of selling answering service products.  However, TAS Marketing’s primary business is selling telephone answering service businesses, which to-date adds up to over 370 businesses totaling a whopping $100 million worth of sales.

Mr. Michael’s background supports his expertise from owning his an answering service in Palo Alto, CA to consulting for several industry manufacturers.  He also founded Connections Magazine [which he sold to the present owner, Peter DeHaan, in 2001], the only remaining trade journal in the industry.  Mr. Michael’s background generates many calls asking him to do evaluations for businesses and to help owners find new acquisitions for their existing answering services.

Additionally, TAS Marketing has taken the notion to stimulate the economy by supporting answering service employees during this economic downturn.  For the rest of the year, TAS Marketing will donate five percent of its commissions to the employees of any answering service that buys the accounts or business of another answering service by using TAS Marketing as its brokerage firm.

Steve Michaels, president of TAS Marketing stated, “Lots of people are complaining about this recession but nobody is doing anything about it.  I have decided to give back to an industry that has supported me for over 30 years with a five percent kickback to the people who make this industry work — the agents.”

Each month, TAS Marketing will write a check to any company that acquires another answering service through its brokerage firm.  “This money will be used exclusively to enhance the lives of the employees who will take on the extra workload that any acquisition can bring,” stated Michaels.

Hudson Valley Answering Service and Answerphone of Jacksonville Sold

TAS Marketing announced the successful sale of two telecommunication businesses that were recently listed.  The first business was Hudson Valley Answering Service located in Poughkeepsie, NY, owned by Dominic and Sharon Gallo.  “The Gallo’s were very satisfied with the sale as negotiations were made and equipment was purchased to enable the buyer to accept a few large accounts that were using radios,” said TAS Marketing’s Steve Michaels.  The buyer, Dick Gore and his daughter Julie Mooney with Berkshire Communications located in Pittsfield, MA have taken over the operation and “found it to be an excellent acquisition for their future growth.”

The second transaction was Answerphone, Inc. located in Jacksonville, Florida owned by Vicki Leonard.  This sale was to Sunshine Communication Services, Inc. owned by Peter and Andy Gross out of Coral Gables, Florida.  “Peter found it helpful that the management would stay with the business and that they were on the same equipment platform,” Michaels summarized.

Both transactions were complete within 60 days.

Connections Communication Services Purchases A Better Answer

Connections Communications Services located in San Francisco and owned by Gary Whalen has purchased A Better Answer located in Hesperia, CA, owned by Dee Cunningham.

The transaction was handled by TAS Marketing.

Finger Lakes Acquires Answer Bay Area in Florida

Gard McLean from Finger Lakes Business Services located in Auburn, New York, has acquired Answer Bay Area, Inc. owned and operated since 1992 by Pete Ritchie in Tampa, Florida.  The transition was almost seamless according to Gard.

“We’re happy to add Answer Bay Area to our list of acquisitions,” said Gard, who is also happy to now own a call center in sunny Florida.  The transaction was handled by Steve and Chris Michaels from the brokerage firm of TAS Marketing, located in Trout Creek, Montana.
