RPT Provides Secure VoIP Recording
(11/07)
California University of
Pennsylvania, California, PA had a serious problem with the security of voice
recordings made by methods used from traditional VoIP recorder suppliers for
confidential public safety conversations. With a “packet sniffer,” some
software, and a bit of technical expertise, VoIP conversations can be “listened
to” anywhere on the IP network. This includes detective conversations with a
witness, interrogations of hostile individuals, and radio transmissions, all of
which can be intercepted without the benefit of Federal or State wiretap court
orders.
Record/Play Tek (RPT) has
developed software and interface wiring to allow the secure recording of
conversation, as directed by the Public Safety Department of the College,
including the emission of the periodic fifteen-second “you are being recorded”
beep tones, heard by both parties to the conversation. RPT’s methodology is
independent of the brand of VoIP phone system and is applicable to
telemessaging, security, burglar alarm, office, and home recording.
